Potana Rajamaha Viharaya & Prehistoric Caves

Just around 400 metres from our hotel, Potana Rajamaha Viharaya is a quiet cave temple west of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Walk or cycle over to discover a rocky outcrop where ten caves have been recorded, with the temple centred around two larger caves.

Historical Significance

Excavations by the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology in 1991 uncovered stone tools and thousands of animal bone fragments. Charcoal dating places the oldest cultural layer at around 6,000 years ago. These discoveries offer a glimpse of prehistoric life and adaptation to changing environments around Sigiriya.

Visitor Experience

A nearby outing for guests interested in local heritage. Ask our team for walking or cycling directions and current access arrangements. Dress respectfully for the temple and take care on uneven rocky ground.
